Fresh national scrutiny over the UK asylum system

The Daily Express has reported on fresh criticism of the UK’s asylum system following claims that some nationalities may be exploiting existing asylum procedures.

The article also covers a major protest in Portsmouth after a dinghy reportedly carrying around 140 migrants approached the coast, prompting a large emergency response.

Robert Bates, Research Director at the Centre for Migration Control, told the Express that the asylum system was “in utter chaos” and called for a much tougher approach to detention, deportation and asylum claims.

The Home Office said the Government was continuing efforts to reduce small boat crossings, including increased cooperation with France and additional enforcement activity.

The report comes as public scrutiny of the Government’s wider asylum strategy continues – including the use of large-scale accommodation sites such as MOD Bicester Site A.
