Piddington Parish Councillor Joe Marshall has appeared on Talk TV to discuss the legal challenge against the Home Office’s proposals to accommodate up to 1,256 asylum seekers at the former MOD Bicester military site in Oxfordshire.
Speaking with presenter Charlie Rowley, Marshall discusses concerns surrounding the potential environmental impact of the proposed development, particularly its implications for protected wildlife in the surrounding countryside.
The interview follows legal action brought by Bicester Countryside and Communities CIC, the community interest company behind the Wrong Plan Wrong Site campaign. The challenge questions whether the Government acted lawfully in determining that the development did not require a full Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA).
The proposed accommodation site is situated close to Piddington Reserve and an area of countryside known to support a variety of wildlife.
Species of particular concern include rare Barbastelle bats, great crested newts and badgers, all of which benefit from legal protections under UK environmental legislation.
Campaigners argue that the potential effects of a development of this scale require thorough investigation, including appropriate ecological surveys and consideration of measures to protect sensitive habitats and species.
The legal challenge seeks judicial scrutiny of the Government’s decision that a full EIA was unnecessary.
The Talk TV interview brings these environmental concerns to a wider national audience and provides an opportunity to hear directly from a local parish councillor involved in examining the proposals.
