Piddington Campaigners Launch Legal Challenge Over MOD Bicester Asylum Plans

The Daily Mail has reported on a legal challenge brought by Bicester Countryside and Communities CIC, the community interest company behind the Wrong Plan Wrong Site campaign, concerning the Government’s proposals to accommodate up to 1,256 asylum seekers at MOD Bicester.

The High Court challenge questions whether the Home Office acted lawfully when determining that the proposed development did not require a full Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA).

The article highlights concerns about the potential effects of the development on the surrounding natural environment, particularly the protected wildlife found in and around Piddington Reserve.

Local environmental surveys and observations have identified species including rare Barbastelle bats, black hairstreak butterflies, great crested newts, otters and badgers. Campaigners argue that the potential impacts on these species require more detailed investigation before decisions about the development are made.

The report includes comments from a Wrong Plan Wrong Site spokesperson, who explains that the campaign is seeking to establish whether the Government has followed the correct legal procedures and adequately considered the environmental consequences of a development of this scale.

Piddington parish councillor Joe Marshall also discusses the ongoing wildlife monitoring undertaken by local residents, including the use of specialist equipment to identify bat species in the area.

The article additionally references Piddington’s symbolic independence referendum, which attracted national attention and demonstrated the strength of local opposition to the proposals.

The Home Office declined to comment on the details of the ongoing planning application.

The legal challenge represents a significant development in the campaign’s efforts to ensure that the MOD Bicester proposals receive appropriate environmental scrutiny and that decisions are made in accordance with relevant planning and environmental legislation.
